Course overview
Course description
History: Abstract Art in Context (one hour on 6/6/24 and 18/7/24, the remaining part of the sessions will be practical art)
Discover how social change, inventions and the industrial revolution influenced artists. Consider the impact of industrial machines, photography and motorised travel and begin to understand how art moved away from realistic paintings to more abstract ways of interpreting the world. We’ll look at the work of artists such as Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Wyndham Lewis and CRW Nevinson What does this tell us? How does our environment influence what we create?
An Approach to Abstract Art:6/6/24 - 18/7/24
Your tutor will provide you with a structured process to enable your creativity to flourish. A framework which you will continue to be able to use as you develop your own abstract style. We will experiment with photographs of your own environment and develop them into abstract pieces, using acrylic paints. We will consider composition and how you can use it to direct the observer through your painting. We’ll explore the visual and emotional impact which colour, line and shape can impart. We’ll also work with different ways to apply paint to add interest with texture. By the end of the course, you will have a piece of your own abstract art and the tools to start your abstract art journey with confidence. To complete the course, you will require basic art equipment, some acrylic paints and a canvas or board – a list of suggested materials will be provided on Canvas prior to the start of the course. After the course you may wish to develop your techniques further with more in-depth study of abstract or general art techniques.
