History: The Lancastrian Kings - Henry IV and Henry V 1399-1422

“And tell sad stories of the death of kings.” A boy-king at the age of 10, at a time when the Hundred Years War with France was turning against the English, Richard II’s high-handed behaviour and arrogance caused division in society. He alienated his nobles, causing bitter resentment that led to his usurpation and death at the hands of his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke. Henry then spent the next 15 years fighting off challenges to his authority and rebellions across the realm. It was a reign full of conflict and crisis, wearing down a strong, energetic man who died in his early 40s, passing his throne to his son, the charismatic hero of Agincourt, Henry V.

History: Mythology of the Spring Sky

Ever looked up at the night sky, or the signs of the zodiac, and wondered how the constellations got their names? Why anyone would think those random dots were “obviously” a picture of some strange creature? Or what the stories are behind them? This one-session course picks out some of them that are appropriate to the time of year, and shows why they were important, what their myths are, and how the stories fit together. Today’s stories cover two of the Labours of Hercules: his argument with a Lion, and his fight against the Hydra (with interruptions from a Crab). We will also look at an alternative story about that Hydra, and how it was blamed for the actions of Corvus the raven. Finally, there’s Virgo, and how she’s responsible for Spring.

Art Practical: Advanced Gel Plate Printing

Gel printing is colourful, exciting and highly addictive! This session will introduce you to further techniques and the results can lead to some finished prints that could be suitable for framing, used in collage work or used to make greetings cards. Some resulting prints could be used as design ideas or starting points for a painting or textile design work. Colour and texture will be explored to produce a range of background ideas and these will be over printed using resist techniques or displacement of colour. We will be using simple materials that are easily accessible to create masks and stencils as well as being shown how to cut your own masks to produce layered, more complex prints.

History: The Myths Behind our Constellations

Ever looked up at the night sky, or the signs of the zodiac, and wondered how the constellations got their names? Why anyone would think those random dots were “obviously” a picture of some strange creature? Or what the stories are behind them? This one-session course picks out some of them that are appropriate to the time of year, and shows why they were important, what their myths are, and how the stories fit together. Today, 23rd April, is St George’s Day, and so we will look at the various myths behind Draco, the Dragon. That includes how the continent of Europe got its name, the founding of Thebes, how Hercules tricked Atlas, and the great war between the Olympians and the Giants. The poor dragon gets killed every time (though not by George).

History: Aphra Behn: Poet, Playwright, Prisoner, Spy. Her Life & Times

Join tutor Michael Long on this fascinating one-off session, presented as part of Women's month, looking at the life of Aphra Behn. Aphra Behn was a playwright, poet, translator and royal spy. She was a woman in a world of men, a staunch Royalist, a spy, and condemned as a scarlet woman with loose morals. She was also the first woman in England to identify herself as a professional writer. She wrote to suit the occasion, and she wrote to make money. This is a brief look at her life and times rather than a focus on her literary achievements.
