Animal Psychology: Domestic Canines

The dog behaviour course aims to provide an introduction to the origins and behaviour of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). The course will discuss and display our current knowledge on the ancestry of the domestic dog and how humans began taming, and eventually selectively breeding the Grey wolf (Canis lupus) until a new sub-species evolved. The sessions are all based on archaeological, behavioural, experiential and biological evidence and will introduce general canine behaviour. Some common problem behaviours are touched upon, but the focus of the sessions will be standard dog behaviour in day-to-day life.

Animal psychology: Domestic felines

Why your dog dotes on your every word and action and pines for you when you go out whilst your cat just knocks ornaments off shelves purely for the sake of it and suddenly moves into the house down the street univited! Cats are one of the most popular pets worldwide and yet they were only domesticated a few thousand years ago (as compared to companion dogs which were domesticated aroundo ne hundred and fifty thousand years ago). This means that cats retain a wildness and independence which is in sharp contrast to the dependency on humans that we see in the modern dog. It is perhaps this independence and some would say, aloofness, that is loved and admired by cat lovers all over the world and despised by others.

Psychology: Exploring the Psychologies of Freud, Jung and Others

Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and those that followed them have, in their very different ways, changed the way we think about ourselves, morality, life and love. This course will also look at some of the most influential ideas from Alfred Adler, Eric Erickson, Wilhelm Reich, Viktor Frankl and Erich Fromm. All have influenced our view of human nature, even if we don’t realise it. This is an introductory course, and no previous experience of Psychology is needed.
