Course overview

The day course is for anyone interested in advancing their landscape painting skills through a more abstract perspective. While open to participants of all levels, having some prior experience in painting would be beneficial. In a friendly and supportive group, the tutor will take us through gathering visual references, sketching, colour work and creating a landscape piece of work in your chosen media. Participants will have the opportunity to express their creativity and experiment with abstract approaches under the guidance of the tutor. Over the day we will spend time out in the landscape, where possible, taking photos and sketch book work. The aim is to explore abstract approaches and create an abstract landscape work.

Course description

Over the day, we will explore connecting with the land, drawing exercises and sketching to learn to ‘see’ and ‘respond’ in a more abstract way. Expressing elements through sketching both in monochrome and colour.

We will develop a process for colour mixing to create a palette for capturing light, expressing emotions and creating depth. Working with shapes and texture and creating abstract qualities in our work.

The latter half of the day we will work to create a painting. What makes a good composition in abstract work? We will use the visual resources gathered over the morning and with tutorial support develop this to create an abstract landscape painting.

The day will be about enjoying being creative. There will be lots of experimenting and no pressure to have a finished piece of work at the end of the day. The idea is to explore and develop our creative process and explore working in an abstract way with more confidence. The course is about learning whilst enjoying both the landscape and painting, whilst developing our skills.

The emphasis is on approaches and developing our own styles and ways of working. This course is not about techniques and knowledge of the basic colour wheel would help. It would be an advantage to have some prior painting experience, but not essential, and any media you like to work in, or would like to use over the day.

We will share our work with the group at the end of the day. There will be opportunity for 1 to 1 tutorial time with
