Course overview

Learning to draw is a precious skill that encourages mindfulness and creativity. A quote from the late artist Paula Rego: ‘Sketches always have more vitality than paintings because you're finding things out through doing them.’ Inspired by historical and contemporary artists, this course will build your confidence and expertise in a range of media including pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, using cartridge and mid toned pastel paper. Our topic will be still life – learning to see and analyse real objects is the best teacher for developing your own drawing style. Suitable for beginners and those wishing to develop their skills. Please note that this is a 3-session course running on: Wed 17/07/2024, Wed 24/07/2024, and Wed 31/07/2024.

Course description

The tutor (a professional exhibiting artist) will discuss a range of artists’ drawing styles in an interactive illustrated visual presentation looking at the art of Leonardo, Van Gogh, John Ruskin, Georgia O’ Keeffe and countless contemporary examples. Links will be placed in the Canvas modules signposting you to extra information to support your development, plus the details of slides discussed during the lesson. The tutor will show a filmed demo to give you an example of how to achieve this (and sometimes what not to do!) The group will then be directed to carry out the task, looking at chosen everyday objects in pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, having been placed in a ‘breakout room’ in which a smaller selection of students congregate in order to be given appropriate advice and direction from the tutor. You get to see how the others are doing, which can be fascinating - everyone will have a different approach. The emphasis will be on building a range of skills: composition, line and tone with a variety of media that will expand your visual vocabulary. Learn in a fun and stimulating environment with likeminded people and develop your own drawing style.
