The commitment to invest nearly £800 million in 16-19 education is a significant step forward.

But to truly unlock opportunity and drive inclusive growth, adult education must be front and centre too.

The Prime Minister in his speech talked about national renewal and the need for every child in Britain to get the best start in life. This is an ambition we should all work towards, and I believe what will give children the best start in life is ensuring the adults around them – their parents, grandparents and carers - are equipped with the learning they need to navigate life. For example, the 7.9 million adults who lack basic digital skills. That’s why the WEA will fight to make lifelong learning key to this governments plans for growth in further education.

Education is not just for the young. It’s a second chance for many, and a vital tool for tackling inequality. We must ensure that everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, has the opportunity to thrive in a changing world. For the benefit of individuals, their children, their communities and their local economies.

We urge the government to ensure that this renewed focus on skills includes sustained investment in adult learners across the country.
