Course overview

The course will build on your existing knowledge and experience of using map symbols to navigation in lowland countryside using an Ordnance Survey 1 to 25,000 scale map. We will look at ways of refining your existing skills to add fluency to your use of a map in inclement weather and poor visibility. We will also introduce ways of interpreting landscape forms using contours and other clues contained on your map. We will also learn how to use a base plate compass (Eg. Silva Compass) to take bearings and use these to find a route away from clearly defined paths.

Course description

During the online course you will be able take part in route-finding on a virtual walk as you match photographs of the Derbyshire countryside to map extracts and make choices about how you would proceed if you were on the walk in the real world.

For part of the online sessions you will move away from your computer and undertake short experiments and then return to the online group with your results. Following an introduction to contour interpretation you will have a short personal project to undertake in your own time.

We will cover a thorough introduction to the ‘Silva 1,2,3’ system of taking and using compass bearings. No experience of using a compass is required but by the second session you will need to have your own good quality base plate compass. If you don’t already have a compass you may like to take advice on features to look for in the first session before buying. We will look at range of methods of estimating distance and walking time using a map.

The course is intended to enable you to have safe enjoyment of the countryside and we will look at ways of reducing risks and of maximising our appreciation of the natural world.
