Course overview
Course description
The course starts with a definition of the area named the Peak District and the role that the two main rocks – limestone and Millstone Grit have played in defining both the natural landscape as well as the cultural landscape.
We will visit some of the unique folk traditions of the area and gain a flavour of some of the great houses as well as understanding the lives of ordinary people in history. The Peak District played an important part on the campaigns for countryside access and we will
explore the history of this alongside some of the current debates about countryside management.
The role of countryside access in promoting well-being and good mental health will be covered and will include the pioneering work of campaigned Ethel Haythornthwaite.
The course will offer you a framework within which to select parts of the Peak Park that each students could choose as part of their plans for a visit to the area.
If you live near the Peak District this course is an exciting chance to learn more about the countryside on your doorstep. Or if you live further a field no doubt it will ignite your interest in visiting this beautiful part of the world.
