Course overview
Course description
This geology-based course will centre on the dynamic processes involved in the creation of different rocks and how the planet constantly recycles these. We will discuss: the organic recycling interface of soil; human use of geology with examples in surrounding buildings, notably church walls which reveal local geology; the meaning of landscape in this dynamic scene.
Many specimens will be provided to enable observation and discussion. Powerpoint presentations will illustrate and explain development in Essex through time with consideration of the ice-age, climate change and the future.
Throughout the course students will:
1. Develop observational abilities with regard to specimens and landscapes.
2. Identify major rock types and relate them to the rock cycle.
3. Appreciate the nature of time-scales and rates of change in geological, archaeological and historical time and future events.
4. Understand the basis of recycling between life and rock and in the formation of soil.
5. Gain an appreciation of the past, current and future development of the rocks, climates and landscapes of Essex.
