Kickstart Your Career in Pupil Support!

This short course is designed to help you with your job application and interview for a Pupil Support role. It highlights the online resources available to help support you in the job and with your professional development and briefly introduces the Scottish Education Framework to allow you to understand the terminology you may be asked about in an interview. You will learn about maths anxiety and a little on supporting children with numeracy and maths concepts and be signposted to online learning in this area.  We will wrap it up with tips on preparing your CV and interview techniques!

The WEA provides courses to help you improve your English for daily life, work, and learning. You will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking based on real-life situations. We will focus on helping you use English in everyday conversations, at work, and when studying. You will also improve your grammar and vocabulary. You will have access to our online learning platform Canvas to help you practice outside the classroom. By the end of the course, you will feel more confident using English in many situations.

In this dynamic online course, you will explore:

Diverse Settings: Discover the various environments where community interpreters play a vital role, including housing, community safety, education (both schools and adult services), employment support, and information and advice.
Codes of Practice: Learn about the essential codes of practice that guide interpreters in their work, ensuring professionalism and integrity.
Confidentiality and Impartiality: Understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality and impartiality in all interpreting situations.
Essential Interpreting Skills: Develop practical interpreting skills through role play while navigating common challenges faced in the field.
Ethical Considerations: Delve into the ethical considerations that underpin community interpreting, ensuring you approach each situation with sensitivity and respect.
Effective Session Planning: Learn how to effectively plan for a community interpreting session, ensuring smooth communication and understanding.
Sight Translation Techniques: Develop practical skills and practice sight translation.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a Level 5 SCQF Certificate in Community Interpreting, positioning you to make a real impact in your community.

Eligibility

• Only learners with English as an additional language can apply (native English speakers are not eligible)
• Learners must be able to read and write to a high level in the language they choose to interpret in
• Learners must be able to evidence an English level at a minimum of upper-intermediate (level 5)
• Learners must live in Glasgow
• Learners must have access to a stable internet connection and a suitable device
• Learners must be able to commit to attend 1 online session per week and complete a minimum of 3 hours self-study per week
