Work Ready is a 25-hour intensive programme designed to support young people (aged 19-24) into meaningful work by equipping them with skills employers are looking for.
The course, delivered at our community learning hub at Phoenix House, was designed around the 11 essential skills of the Youth Guarantee Work Experience Programme which includes communication, problem solving and digital skills, supporting learners to address gaps in confidence, employability skills and work readiness. This supports the DWP Youth Guarantee's objective to ensure young people can access work experience opportunities and progress towards stable employment.
Nusrat Hathiari, WEA Head of Partnerships said, "The pilot was a success, achieving 100% retention for all learners who started. I went to speak with the learners on the final day, and they shared how much the course had built their confidence. One learner expressed a strong interest in volunteering with the WEA highlighting the wider impact of the programme beyond work."
Plans are now underway to continue to deliver the course, with discussions taking place to introduce two additional pathways: Confidence Boost and Ready to Learn - to support young people who need extra preparation before taking the Work Ready programme. This ensures learning is accessible to meet the needs of a wider range of learners.
