History: The Course of Irish History – 1848 to the Good Friday Agreement

This second part of two courses traces events from the Great Hunger of 1848-9 up unto the turn of our present century. Fenianism, Home Rule and Land Reform struggles , the Easter Rising, the Irish War of Independence, partition, the Civil War and then the separate fortunes of Northern Ireland and the Free State, (later the Republic) will all be discussed in depth. We conclude with the Civil Rights movement, the Troubles and the peace process. Throughout we use a wealth of documentary evidence, the latest historical analysis, news reports, art, literature, film and photography to illuminate a compelling narrative.

Literature: Portraits of Society, 1954 – 1961 The Angry Decade?

We will discuss four novels, published between 1954 and 1961, and think about whether they have stood the test of time. Much of this period has been labelled as the decade of The Angry Young Men. We will be thinking about what that means, and whether any of these four novels belong in that grouping as we look, in detail, at The Tortoise and the Hare, by Elizabeth Jenkins; Lucky Jim, by Kingsley Amis; The Ballad of Peckham Rye by Muriel Spark and A Severed Head, by Iris Murdoch. We will consider how these writers present society.
