Course overview

Would you like to turn your jewellery-making skills into a small business or fund-raising enterprise? What would you need to know? How could you market your work and sell it? How will you cost your time and materials? How would you advertise? Who will you sell to? This course is also very practical, and you will create wonderful pieces using budget-friendly materials as well as improving your understanding of the techniques, methods and processes of producing handmade jewellery. To make the most of this course it is useful if you have some experience of making hand-made jewellery but beginners are also welcome as you will be guided step by step through each project.

Course description

Engage in hands-on projects and receive personalized guidance. Join a friendly community of learners to improve skills, exchange ideas, and showcase your creations. Explore options for selling your work for fundraising or profit, including costing, marketing and obtaining supplies.

The tutor will provide materials and the tools you will need. A small financial contribution towards materials (£15) is required, especially as you will be able to take your pieces home to wear or give as gifts. This is payable direct to the tutor at the beginning of the course but if you are experiencing financial hardship, you may be able to pay this in smaller instalments. You can also apply for learner support. Please ask the tutor for details.

Instructions and other resources are available throughout the course on Canvas, the WEA digital resource, which you will also use to track your progress. The tutor will give constructive feedback on your work which will support you to improve and progress throughout the course.

At the end of the course the group will create a group display, showcasing presentation, marketing, packaging and pricing.

The course takes place over 11 weeks with breaks in school holidays and learners should ensure that they will be available to complete the whole course.

After the course you may progress to a further course with the WEA.
