Course overview
Course description
Creative Writing permits us to tell stories. Storytelling is a powerful tool in society, often taken for granted, transformable for any form, many mediums, and numerable audiences. Stories can entertain, inform, educate, scare, amuse, and otherwise stimulate on an emotional and cerebral level. Imagination soars, unusual topics are explored, and important debates may take place. Whether it be a short story, a novel, a poem, or a script; creative writing gives individuals a voice and the power to create lifeforms and construct complex worlds.
So, how do we get started? Can we fit it around an already busy lifestyle? Where can we find inspiration? What methods can we implement to stay motivated? Is it possible to overcome writer’s block? In a sea of popular authors, how can I expect to make a difference? These questions and more will be explored within this short course.
In reference to creative-writing basics such as vocabulary, grammar, wordplay, figurative language, action, description, and show-don’t-tell, a variety of prompted exercises will ease students into a social and productive classroom environment. Peer support with an emphasis on friendly and constructive feedback will enable prospective authors to learn from one another whilst working toward personalised goals. Attendees can expect a wide range of literary excerpts including 'Hound Of The Baskervilles' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 'S' by JJ Abrahms, 'Disgrace' by JM Coetzee, 'Sombrero Fallout' by Richard Brautigan
