Pre-Entry ESOL: First Steps in English 1

If you are just starting to learn English and want to start preparing to apply for work, this course will be right for you. The course is for people who live in Nottingham and are beginner level in English. It is a face-to-face course. You will start to learn some of the language needed to apply for work and also at work. You will practise your speaking and listening skills alongside reading and writing in English. We will help you to start becoming more confident to talk to people in English in your local community and also to become more independent so you don’t have to rely on others to translate everything. We will also start learning some of the words and phrases needed in other everyday situations, such as:

• Applying for jobs

• Making appointments at the doctor, dentist or other medical situation and explaining what you need

• Shopping

• Using public transport

• Filling in forms

After you have completed this short course, you can move on to further courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), maths, digital skills or other work-related skills. Some of these courses lead to formal qualifications.
