Course overview

This course is funded by the Department for Education and only open to residents living in non devolved authorities. Creative Arts courses give you the chance to explore your creativity in a relaxed and supportive space. Creative Arts includes a wide range of activities such as drawing, painting, mosaics, sewing, craft, and creative writing. You don’t need any previous experience, although the Foundations in Creative Arts course can be a helpful starting point if you’re new to creative learning. In the course, you will be introduced to practical creative arts skills through simple, accessible activities that help you build technique, confidence, and artistic understanding. You will explore different materials, tools, and processes while learning how to apply core creative methods. Each session focuses on building practical skills, perhaps trying out new techniques, and developing your own personal approach to making. You will be encouraged to experiment with ideas, refine your skills, and grow your creative interests at a pace that feels right for you. By the end of the course, you will have created a series of small pieces that show your developing skills. You will also gain the knowledge and inspiration to continue exploring creative arts independently or move on to other skills based or community learning courses.

Course description

In these courses, you will be exploring different materials, tools, and techniques. It is suitable for all experience levels, although some sessions may be tailored to different skill levels. The main aim is to help you build strong foundational artistic skills while growing your confidence in using a range of creative processes.

Throughout the sessions, you will experiment with simple but effective techniques: drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, and basic craft. Activities are designed to help you understand key principles such as composition, colour, texture, and form, while still giving you freedom to make your own creative choices.

You will be supported to try new approaches, develop your techniques, and discover which materials and methods suit your emerging artistic style.

Courses focus on exploration and skill building, allowing you to learn at your own pace while gaining hands-on experience with a variety of creative tools.

By the end of the course, you will have created a collection of small pieces that show your developing skills and growing confidence. You will also leave with ideas, techniques, and inspiration to continue your artistic journey independently or progress to other creative community or skills based courses.
