Course overview
Course description
This practical sewing course is designed to help you develop core sewing skills while building confidence and creativity. You’ll start by getting to know your sewing machine, learning how to thread it, adjust tension, and practise basic stitches. Through guided activities, you’ll sew in straight lines and curves and explore hand-sewing techniques for finishing and detail work. You’ll work with a range of fabrics and learn how to cut, pin, and assemble pieces to create a simple tote bag. Using commercial patterns, you’ll practise reading instructions, making basic alterations, and constructing a customised item. You’ll also learn how to install zips and apply topstitching for a professional finish.
As the course progresses, you’ll begin planning a small product line of handmade items suitable for sale. You’ll explore pricing strategies, create simple adverts, and learn how to promote your work using social media. Finally, you’ll develop a business plan using the Business Canvas Model to map out your ideas for the next 12 months. No prior experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
