Literature: 6 Classic Texts You Can Read in a Week

Reading short texts is an excellent introduction to the works of some of the greatest writers of the western canon. Each week we focus on a classic work of fiction, reading and discussing key passages. The texts include short stories, novellas and novels and span over two centuries, from the 18th century to modern times. We begin with Jane Austen’s Lady Susan and end with Carson McCullers’ The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. We’ll share and debate interpretations, sharpen our critical and appreciative faculties, understand what fiction can tell us about the society and culture that produced it, and, hopefully, be inspired to read other works by the writers featured on the course.

History: Poland - A Brief History

Now and again Poland emerges in the news expressing concerns about Russia’s ambitions but are these only recent or do they have any historical precedents? Are there for instance any lessons to be learnt from Poland’s past in light of the current situation in Ukraine? Discovering how Poland developed and survived, this course outlines why it has fluctuated between ascendancy, vulnerability and suffering against the background of Germany and Russia. Tracing its emergence as a key medieval political player through to its disappearance, re-emergence & tragedy of 1939, the course explores Poland’s often overlooked story.
