Course overview

This course is funded by the Department for Education and only open to residents living in non devolved authorities. This Foundation Course in Support Work in Schools and Colleges introduces you to the role of support staff in education. It’s designed for beginners who want to help teachers and support children, young people, or adults in learning settings. You’ll learn how schools and colleges work and explore the different roles that support teaching and learning. The course covers the basics, including communication, teamwork, creating a positive learning environment, and understanding the needs of different learners. Through simple activities, discussions, and practical tasks, you’ll build confidence and get a clear picture of what support work involves. You’ll also learn about respect, inclusion, and how to help learners feel safe and supported. Throughout the course, you’ll reflect on your own skills and interests and think about possible next steps, such as volunteering, further training, or working toward a qualification in supporting teaching and learning.

Course description

This Foundation Course in Support Work in Schools and Colleges is for you if you’re interested in working in education or helping learners in a classroom setting. It gives you a clear, simple introduction to what support staff do and the responsibilities involved in helping teachers and learners in schools, colleges, and other learning environments.

During the course, you’ll explore different types of support roles, such as classroom assistants, learning support assistants, and learning mentors. You’ll learn how support workers help teachers deliver lessons and how they offer encouragement and practical help to learners who need extra support.

You’ll also be introduced to key topics like creating a safe and positive learning environment, understanding basic safeguarding, and supporting learners with different needs and abilities. You’ll learn how good communication, patience, and teamwork help you work effectively with teachers, students, and other staff.

Through practical activities, discussions, and simple tasks, you’ll build confidence and get a real sense of what it’s like to work in an education setting. You’ll also have the chance to think about your own skills and interests and explore your next steps—whether that’s further learning, volunteering, or moving into an entry-level support role.

This course is ideal if you’re new to learning, returning to education, or exploring future opportunities in schools, colleges, or community learning environments.
