Course overview
Course description
Conversation with Baking is a 24‑hour, 12‑session course designed for pre‑entry ESOL learners who want to build confidence in speaking and listening through enjoyable, hands‑on activities. The course sits within Non‑regulated Tailored Learning: Managing Mental Health and Wellbeing, with a strong focus on improving learners’ wellbeing through social connection, creativity and shared experiences.
Each session introduces simple, practical language linked to baking, such as ingredients, equipment, actions and short instructions. Learners work together to prepare easy bakes, practising everyday English in a relaxed and supportive environment. Activities include naming ingredients, following short spoken instructions, asking for help, sharing baking tips and talking about preferences. The emphasis is on communication, confidence and participation rather than accuracy.
The course is designed to reduce anxiety, build routine and promote positive mental health by creating a friendly space where learners can talk, collaborate and enjoy a shared task. Tutors use visual prompts, demonstrations and modelling to ensure accessibility for learners with very low literacy or limited English. By the end of the course, learners will feel more confident using simple English in everyday situations and will have developed social connections through the shared experience of baking together.
