Personal Development: Democracy in Crisis?

It is often said that democracy is in crisis in Europe and beyond. Voter turnout is often low and especially younger people do not vote at all. Fewer are members of political parties than in the past and most people now distrust politicians. Many have expressed concerns about the increasing influence and popularity of far right and authoritarian political parties and movements and the polarised nature of public debate, especially online. In this course Philosophy, Psychology and Political Science will be used to get a clear idea of threats to democracy and indicate possible constructive responses to them. Please note this course is held fortnightly.

Personal Development: Ethics for beginners

Ethics is about the 'oughts' in life - how people ought to behave, or how society should be organised. Ethical questions are often difficult - situations are not clear cut, or we face a dilemma. We all have to deal with these issues but philosophers have done this in a more systematic way than most of us. On this course you can gain greater clarity about what ethics is about - is it subjective, objective, prescriptive? We will consider different ways of making moral decisions - are the consequences of our actions most important, or the principles we follow in making decisions or what kind of person we aspire to be? This course meets fortnightly.

Professional Development: Are You Ready to be a Manager?

What makes a good manager? What are the difference between the skills you need to employ as a good manager and those you demonstrate as a competent team player? What is the difference between a manager and a leader and what style of management or leadership may be appropriate for you and your organisation? We will investigate whether there are any personal skill gaps and how you might fill these. Bringing together both theory and practice, this course will help you plot your course to a future management role, and help you plan your route to your new role. You may be a newly promoted manager, or perhaps you want to identify whether you are ready. Join this class to find out more.

Personal Development: Philosophy - Knowledge and Morality; Universal or Relative?

People have responded to recent or current events and developments, especially Covid and climate change, in different ways. For many the authority of (scientific) knowledge has been confirmed and moral obligations have been clarified - e.g. we all had a duty to follow Covid rules and continued reliance on fossil fuels is morally indefensible. Others have become increasingly sceptical about the scientific 'establishment' and a kind of morality police they see at work in relation to responses to Covid or climate change. We will use philosophical ideas to explore whether knowledge and morality are absolute or variable.
