Our creative writing courses will nourish your inner writer, providing you with a platform to develop your love of poetry, non-fiction or script development. If literature courses are more your kind of thing, then you’re in luck too, as there are a wide range of topics to choose from.  

Literary greats and great periods in history

Our language courses offer you the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in a completely new culture, developing your skills so that you can speak confidently in countries right across the world. German, Italian and Greek are just a few examples of the language courses we have to offer, with many others taking place throughout the year.  

As you’d expect, literary greats such as Agatha Christie and Shakespeare feature regularly. There’s also the option to examine other time periods in English literature too, helping you develop your critical reading and analysis skills - perfect whether you’re a beginner or more experienced in the subject.  

If you prefer history then you’ve got a choice too, from courses on subjects you’d expect such as the first world war, or art history and studying the works of iconic painters such as Salvador Dali.

Literature: Historical Fiction - 19th century people and events through a 21st century lens

This course will consider two novels written in the 21st century which look at real people and real events from the 19th century. We will look at Thomas Keneally’s novel The Dickens Boy which was published in 2021 and considers the life of one of Charles Dickens’s sons who emigrated to Australia to make a life as a sheep farmer. The other novel we will be looking at is The Fraud by Zadie Smith which was published in 2023 and explores the notorious Tichborne trial of the 19th century, a trial about identity fraud and inheritance. We will study the novels in the order listed here.

Music Appreciation: The Music of Russia: From the Tsars to Stalin

The sparkling ballets of Tchaikovsky, the fantasy world of Rimsky Korsakov, the romance of Rachmaninov and the quirky humour of Prokofiev. Over eight weeks, you will meet these and many more glorious examples of Russian music from the early 19TH century to the recent past. As we chart how the national music developed from folk beginnings to internationally recognised trail-blazers, you will be able to develop your listening skills and learn about the challenges with which the composers had to struggle in making their voices heard. Our course is for everyone. No previous knowledge is required; just a willingness to listen, learn and enjoy.
