Course overview

The first session of this course will be online and the second session will be at Tate Britain. Join a creative writing online workshop writing poems about Tate Britain artworks, then visit Tate Britain to find your artworks and for more poetic inspiration with a published poet as your guide. You will meet up with those you met online on the morning before and respond to more art with further inspired writing. Ekphrastic poetry has come to mean poetry about works of art. You could describe the scene in a painting, what happened before, what happens after it and what is going on outside the frame; or write a monologue for the sitter in a portrait, or for the painter; or make a sculpture come to life. You will meet up with likeminded people and come away from this course with several inspired poems.

Course description

Writing on the Underground is a lively and imaginative three-hour creative writing course that brings London’s transport network to life. Starting at Gants Hill underground station, you’ll explore the space around you and use its atmosphere, movement and characters to spark fresh ideas. With support from your tutor, you’ll take notes, observe details, and begin shaping these impressions into short pieces of writing.

We then travel together to Leytonstone, using the journey itself as inspiration. With your notepad or tablet in hand, you’ll create stories based on the people, interactions and moments you notice along the way. This hands-on approach helps you develop stronger observational skills and unlock new creative possibilities.

The session ends back at Gants Hill, where we gather over coffee, and have the chance to share your work, receive supportive feedback, and reflect on your creative progress.
