Course description

First Steps in ESOL is a pre entry course designed for learners who are new to English and need a gentle introduction to early communication skills before progressing to Entry 1 ESOL. The course focuses on building confidence with essential everyday vocabulary, including words for people, places, objects and simple daily activities. Learners practise recognising key sounds, matching spoken words to pictures and understanding meaning through visuals, gestures and modelling. They also learn to follow simple classroom instructions such as “sit down”, “listen”, “write your name” and “work with a partner”, helping them feel comfortable in a learning environment.

Speaking activities focus on using single words and short chunks of language to share basic personal information, such as name, country, family and simple preferences. Learners take part in highly structured tasks including repetition, choral practice, matching activities and guided pair work. Listening tasks help learners identify familiar words and respond to simple questions.

The course supports learners to develop early study skills, build confidence and become familiar with classroom routines. By the end of the course, learners will be able to understand and use very simple English in supported situations and will be ready to progress to Entry 1 ESOL or Get Ready for ESOL.
