Course overview
Course description
English Conversation – Entry 1 supports learners who are beginning to use spoken English and want to build confidence communicating in simple, everyday situations. The course introduces familiar language for greetings, introductions, personal information, daily routines and common interactions such as shopping, travelling or asking for help. Learners practise listening for key words, responding with short phrases and using simple vocabulary to communicate clearly and appropriately. The course focuses on helping learners feel comfortable speaking English in a supportive environment where they can build confidence step by step.
Learners take part in a range of practical speaking activities, including pair work, role play, guided dialogues and short group tasks. These activities encourage repetition, build familiarity with everyday language and help learners develop early conversation skills such as taking turns, showing understanding and asking very simple questions. Visual prompts, real life examples and everyday scenarios are used throughout the course to help learners connect new language to their daily lives and to support learners who may be new to classroom learning.
The course also helps learners develop confidence in participating in group activities, listening to others and practising simple communication strategies. By the end of the course, learners will feel more confident using simple English in familiar situations, be more willing to join short conversations and be better prepared to progress to Entry 2 conversation classes or other ESOL courses or start their entry 1 ESOL Skills for Life qualification pathways.
