Course description

Practical English Skills (Entry 2) supports learners who want to develop more confident and independent communication in everyday situations at home, in the community and in simple work‑related contexts. The course builds on Entry 1 skills and introduces tasks that require greater detail and understanding, including taking part in longer conversations, giving information, asking questions and understanding short explanations in situations such as appointments, travel, shopping and community activities. Learners also practise talking about daily routines, making arrangements and asking for help when needed.

Reading and writing tasks include understanding short messages, notes, timetables, leaflets, simple instructions and other everyday texts. Learners practise writing short sentences, completing simple forms, producing clear messages and writing short notes linked to real‑life needs. Activities include role play, pair work, group discussions, reading tasks and guided writing to build confidence step by step.

The course helps learners develop strategies for clearer communication, such as asking for clarification, summarising information, checking understanding and using appropriate tone. Learners also explore everyday problem‑solving situations, including dealing with simple issues, following basic procedures and communicating with different people in familiar settings.

By the end of the course, learners will feel more confident communicating independently in a wide range of everyday situations and will be ready to progress to Entry 3 ESOL courses such as English for Work Readiness.
