Course overview
Course description
Intermediate ESOL Essential Skills (Entry 2) supports learners who want to develop more confident and independent communication in English. The course builds on Entry 1 skills and introduces tasks that require more detail, accuracy and understanding. Learners practise taking part in longer conversations, giving simple information, asking questions and understanding short explanations in everyday situations such as appointments, travel, shopping and community activities.
Reading and writing tasks include understanding short messages, notes, timetables, simple instructions and everyday texts. Learners also practise writing short sentences, completing simple forms and producing short messages or notes. Activities include role‑play, pair work, group discussions, reading tasks and guided writing.
The course helps learners develop strategies for clearer communication, such as asking for clarification, summarising information and using appropriate tone. Learners also explore everyday problem‑solving situations, such as asking for help, dealing with simple issues and understanding basic procedures.
By the end of the course, learners will feel more confident communicating independently in familiar situations and will be ready to progress to Advanced ESOL Essential Skills (Entry 3).
