Course description

This beginner-friendly course introduces learners to three essential fastening techniques widely used in sewing, textiles and fashion: zips, buttons, and flaps. Designed for complete beginners or those looking to strengthen foundational skills, the course provides step-by-step guidance in understanding how closures function, how they are constructed, and how to apply them neatly and confidently to a range of textile projects.

Students will begin by learning how to prepare fabric, measure and mark placement lines, and handle basic sewing tools with accuracy. The course covers inserting standard zips, sewing buttons securely by hand or machine, creating buttonholes, and constructing simple flap closures commonly used in bags, garments and home décor items. Each technique is introduced through demonstrations followed by supported practice, ensuring learners gain hands-on experience at a comfortable pace.

Throughout the course, participants will create a set of neatly finished samples that showcase each closure type. They will also explore how closures contribute to both function and design, and how thoughtful choice and placement can enhance the appearance of a finished piece.

By the end of the course, learners will have developed a solid foundation in using basic closures and built the confidence needed to apply these essential techniques to future sewing and textile projects.
