Professor Allen Fisher

Allen Fisher is a painter, poet and art historian with a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, teaching and creative practice. Now Emeritus Professor of Poetry and Art at Manchester Metropolitan University, Allen has enjoyed a successful and fulfilling teaching career. He has taught art history, drawing and composition at Goldsmiths College of Art, Hereford College of Art, Roehampton and Manchester.
Teaching is something Allen takes real pleasure in, and he has been working closely with adult learners for more than 40 years. He has lectured and taught widely across the UK, as well as internationally in Abu Dhabi, Canada, Paris and the United States, bringing a rich, global perspective into the classroom.
Alongside his teaching, Allen has an extensive creative and publishing career. His book Imperfect Fit: Aesthetic Function, Facture, and Perception in Art and Writing Since 1950 was published by the University of Alabama Press in 2016. His poetry has been widely recognised, including receiving the Cholmondeley Award in 2019, and his long‑term poetic projects have been published in major collections. He has also performed with English Fluxus, held artist and poet residencies in the USA, and exhibited his paintings internationally, most recently in Oslo in 2022. His work can be found in collections including Tate, King’s College London and the Living Museum in Iceland, as well as private collections worldwide.
