Need guidance and inspiration to make your story zing? Feel overwhelmed with editing? Join this course for tips and examples of how to edit your work: from the macro of the bigger picture questions to make the story consistent and coherent to the micro of syntax and building tension. This is not a proofreading course. It’s about weeding out info dumping, bringing alive the scene through showing rather than tell. It's about weeding out redundant words, cliches, fixing time hops and transitions and ensure there's enough forward momentum. We write in-class, share, get feedback and re-write. Samples of work with before and after edits will help us know what to focus on. To keep yourself accountable you will be encouraged to research relevant calls for submissions and commit to submitting. Also guidance on the submission process will be shared.

To introduce students to the art of portraiture in a relaxed and supportive environment. This course takes students through the basics of sketching and then painting faces to gain a good likeness. It provides step by step instructions on positioning the features, the use of light and shade as well as colour mixing. This portraiture course is suitable for both beginners as well as experienced students. The course will provide you with an understanding of the methods, materials and concepts required to create both drawn and painted portraits. We will be using a variety of drawing and painting materials. Basic anatomy, colour mixing, paint application and ways of looking will all be discussed.

This course will explore the subject of madness in nineteenth century British fiction. We will examine extracts from a range of texts, and all extracts will be provided on Canvas for you to read. Authors that we will discover are the Brontes, Dickens, Henry James and Oscar Wilde. These are our principal figures but we shall refer to a number of other writers to provide context. Our key texts will be: Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, The Signalman (by Dickens), The Turn of the Screw and The Picture of Dorian Gray. The course will analyse each extract closely and contextualise it in terms of Victorian thought and history. This will lead to provoking discussions and ample opportunities for discussion.
