Art Appreciation: Indigenous Artwork- Sami, Aboriginal, Native American and more

In this course, we will focus on artworks that are rarely studied in themselves: the art objects and artworks created by indigenous peoples. Come and learn about the artistic traditions of Native American peoples, of the Sami, of Aboriginal Australians, and more. You will discover cultures that are under-represented within the art world. We will discuss the styles, and types of art and craft that are favoured by specific groups, as well as the narratives that are expressed in these artefacts. A focus on contemporary indigenous artists will allow us to discuss matters of exclusion, assimilation, and rights.

This day course is for nature lovers who would like to express their love of the land through painting and drawing. All welcome but some experience in painting would be useful. Creative Writing: Freefall: Writing Contemporary Poetry

This five week series of workshops continues Stephen Smith’s popular courses on writing contemporary poetry. These workshops will concentrate on the subject of free-verse and will explore a variety of techniques associated with the genre over the last one hundred years. Each workshop will focus on an important element of free-verse technique and will enable each student to produce the first draft of a poem, which utilises that technique. By the end of the course, each student will have written at least three poems, which they will be encouraged to share with each other in a final session that will explore how to edit and to read.

History: An Introduction to Criminal Profiling and Crime Scene Analysis

The origins of criminal profiling in the UK can be traced back to Dr Thomas Bond in the 1880s. This course will explore the evolution of applications and techniques over time, using top-down and bottom-up techniques to profile three case studies from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, respectively. Each photoset exercise will incorporate an analysis of the crime scene and associated criminal investigation, discussing the importance and limitations of eyewitness testimony and other significant factors. In order to maximise learning opportunities, this course will feature complex crimes involving multiple references to substance misuse, extreme violence, and use of weapons. This course assumes no prior knowledge.
