Arts & Crafts: Bargello Bookmarks (Multiply West Sussex)

*Please note - this course is provided exclusively for residents of West Sussex* This course has been designed to introduce the historical technique of Bargello needlework embroidery. The course is suitable for beginners who will be stitching for the first time all the way to improvers to advanced who have a basic knowledge of hand embroidery and would like to add to their practise by applying stitch techniques and developing patterns in a new and creative way. The session will begin with the introduction of bargello and its practical application before moving onto starting the project creation. The practical part of the session will be in three sections, beginning with measuring and cutting the base for your bookmark, choosing or creating your design and finally stitching your beautiful bookmark. At the end of the course every person will be able to see other projects that can be completed using the knowledge and techniques used and learnt in the session. The aim of the course is to create a bookmark that not only looks brilliant and is designed/adapted and made by you but will also serve a purpose. Materials will be provided for your bookmarks and the sessions will include use of technology to show different patterns/techniques and images of completed projects.

History: Art and About: The Great Fire: It started at a pudding and ended at a pye.

Part of the WEA Art and About Festival 2024! A walk from Pudding Lane through the City of London to Pye Corner. This walk will chart the damage of the 1666 Great Fire of London and place it in the cultural context of the time. We will meet some key characters through whose eyes the story of the fire has been told and also those who came in to rebuild and reshape the city in its aftermath. Each participant will receive a handout to refer to along the route which includes images and quotes to illustrate the extent of this catastrophe. We will meet at The Monument (tube is monument tube or bank tube). It is the Monument to the Great Fire of London Fish St Hill, London EC3R 8AH. I will have a red folder with me!
