Art and About: Walking Anglo-Saxon London

This is a walk around the former site of Lundenwic, the Anglo-Saxon settlement of London of the 8th and 9th Century. Nothing remains in terms of building but there is much to learn from the archaeological and documentary record. Using the record and the existing street plan and a lot of imagination we can begin to reconstruct something of what the settlement was like. The site of the former settlement encompasses Charing Cross, Covent Garden and the Strand and that will be the area of this very gentle and easy stroll. We will take frequent pauses to consider the evidence and consider the nature and legacy of this ancient settlement. Meet Eleanor Cross, Charing Cross Station.

With stimulating writing prompts, by reading inspiring stories from fiction and creative non fiction, you'll have time to write and share and get feedback from peers and the tutor. History: Waves of Migration, 450 - 1950

In contemporary Britain there is probably no issue arousing deep emotions that that of immigration. The arrival of the ‘Windrush Generation’, followed by pressures created by the movement of illegal migrants across the Channel, have led to continuing arguments and strains in the host society. There is however nothing new about the arrival into and subsequent absorption of newcomers. The themes to be discussed within this course include the causes for the arrival of the immigrants, the changes they made upon economic life and society and the reactions of the existing inhabitants.
