What are life skills?

Simply put, they are skills that make everyday life easier. Life skills include cooking, budgeting, communicating with others, health, well-being and managing emotions. Sometimes this means learning new things, and sometimes it means building on things you already know.

Sometimes adulting can be hard. These courses can help make it feel just that bit easier, make you feel more independent and empower you to face the future ahead.

Advanced British Sign Language (BSL)

Learn to have in-depth interactions in BSL. Embrace inclusive communication and help dismantle communication barriers in society. Knowing how to sign can help you in a variety of situations where you need to interact with deaf people. This BSL course is suitable for you if you need to communicate with deaf people or people with hearing impairments. It can help you in a variety of contexts, for example in a voluntary or community role, or simply in social interactions. This course is aimed at advanced-level learners who have a solid base in British Sign Language (BSL). If you are not at an advanced level yet, you can take a beginner’s or improver’s BSL course.

Personal Development: Mind@Work

This course is put on in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council and Job Centre Plus. Are you unemployed and looking for work but experiencing mental health issues? These might include, but not be limited to, stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks or post traumatic stress. This free support programme will help you to cope better with these challenges and discover techniques and strategies to use in every day life. Cooking Practical: Using things from your store cupboard

Store cupboard cooking course covers techniques for creating delicious meals & healthier snacks using ingredients commonly found in the fridge / cupboard. The friendly tutor will help you to learn and understand how to make the most of those store cupboard staples at any meal time. This course will also emphasise budget friendly cooking ideas, batch cooking recipes and have a focus on ways families in households can reduce food waste. There will be some practical cooking and or food themed sessions most weeks. The course starts the following week so you will be told what you need to bring by the tutor at the enrolment session. some of the Food staples required for the for recipes will be provided to the group by the Food train-bank at Holmescarr.
