Music Making

If you love music and singing then this course is for you. The course has been written for people who attend the Better Futures day centre in Plymouth. On this course you will learn how to improve your singing technique and how to play different percussion instruments from all over the world. On this course we encourage you to listen and learn about different types of music and enjoy making music alongside others in the group. You do not need to know anything about music to join this course, you just need to join in and have a go.

Music Appreciation: Anniversaries and Exhibitions

The course aims to encourage learners to attend art exhibitions and/or musical events with a greater background knowledge in order to enhance appreciation. If actual attendance is not possible, to undertake independent research and hence, enjoy a more active and cultural lifestyle. The class also offers an opportunity for learners to interact socially with like- minded people in intellectual pursuits. Music Making: Songwriting- Intermediate

Develop your songwriting skills in a supportive online group. This course is for those who have started writing songs before (both melody and lyrics) and want to get them finished and recorded! We will explore what criteria are needed to declare a song 'finished', as well as taking inspiration from existing songs and music theory to ensure the songs we have written are the best they can be. We will also put together a track on SoundTrap or other software of your choice. Please note: This is an intermediate level course and requires existing skills in order to take part.

Music Appreciation: Across Borders and Boundaries: Classical Music through the Ages

On this 10-week, online course you will listen to, explore and enjoy a wide range of classical music from its earliest eras through to the present day. You will engage with individual works discussing the circumstances of and reasons behind their creation, and evaluate the particulars of the sonic landscape they offer through genre, style, technique and arrangement. The course will also pay attention to the life and background of each different composer and how their approach to composition contributes to their distinct body of work. On this course, you will also listen to and discuss examples of music from other genres such as jazz, film music, contemporary/neo/post-classical, ambient and electronic music, and world music and it is hoped that you'll take your new-found analytical skills back to your community. No experience is necessary for this course, just bring yourself and your enthusiasm!
