Art History: Who's the Muse? Five Pioneering Women Artists: Eileen Agar, Claude Cahun, Isabel Rawsthorne, Dora Maar and Lee Miller

What is a muse? How and why has this convention endured for centuries? This course explores the identity and representation of the muse looking at the lives and work of five female artists: Claude Cahun, Eileen Agar, Isabel Rawsthorne, Dora Maar and Lee Miller. Each has enjoyed a revival as practitioners of dynamic art forms in painting, photography and sculpture. Cahun, Agar and Miller escaped comfortable backgrounds to pursue independent paths amid the avant-garde of the 1920s and ‘30s. Rawsthorne was long regarded as the beautiful muse of Jacob Epstein, Alberto Giacometti and Francis Bacon, while Maar remained in Picasso’s shadow for decades. We explore how each of the three artists challenged social and cultural conventions of their day to produce some of the most startling artworks of modern British art.
