Course overview
Course description
Societal Norms and Culture in the UK is designed for ESOL learners who want to build confidence using English while understanding the cultural expectations and everyday behaviours that shape life in the UK. The course introduces simple language for daily conversations, including making small talk, asking for help in shops or public places and responding politely in common social situations. Learners explore major UK celebrations and customs, such as Christmas and other widely recognised events, and learn how people typically celebrate them.
A key part of the course is understanding the British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. Learners discuss what these values mean in everyday life and how they appear in schools, workplaces and communities. The course also helps learners recognise common UK social behaviours; such as queuing, punctuality, personal space and polite small talk, and practise responding appropriately.
Learners are introduced to places where they can find support and advice, including community centres, local help services, and organisations offering guidance on personal safety or legal issues. Activities include roleplay, short reading tasks, matching activities and guided discussions. By the end of the course, learners will feel more confident communicating in everyday situations and navigating cultural expectations in the UK.
