Course overview

This course is funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and is only available to residents living within the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority area. This beginner-friendly sewing course helps you build confidence and practical skills in machine and hand sewing. You’ll learn to use a sewing machine, work with different fabrics, and follow commercial patterns to create simple items like a tote bag. The course also introduces basic business skills, including pricing, marketing, and planning a product line. It is Ideal for those preparing for work, further learning, or community engagement. This course supports your journey into creative enterprise and personal development.

Course description

This practical sewing course is designed to help you develop core sewing skills while building confidence and creativity. You’ll start by getting to know your sewing machine, learning how to thread it, adjust tension, and practise basic stitches. Through guided activities, you’ll sew in straight lines and curves and explore hand-sewing techniques for finishing and detail work. You’ll work with a range of fabrics and learn how to cut, pin, and assemble pieces to create a simple tote bag. Using commercial patterns, you’ll practise reading instructions, making basic alterations, and constructing a customised item. You’ll also learn how to install zips and apply topstitching for a professional finish.

As the course progresses, you’ll begin planning a small product line of handmade items suitable for sale. You’ll explore pricing strategies, create simple adverts, and learn how to promote your work using social media. Finally, you’ll develop a business plan using the Business Canvas Model to map out your ideas for the next 12 months. No prior experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
