Entry Levels 1,2,3: If you have never studied this subject before and you’re not confident in your skills, Entry levels are a good starting point.
Level 1: Covers basic skills and knowledge needed for this subject
Level 2: Building on basic knowledge or experience. Similar to Grade 4/ C at GCSE or O level in England or Standards in Scotland.
Level 3: Learn about the topic in-depth and have a broad range of skills. Independent working Equivalent to an A level in England or Higher in Scotland.
Beginners: A perfect introduction if you have no experience and skills in this subject.
Improvers: The next step if you have basic skills or knowledge but want to progress them further.
Advanced: Build on the solid experience and skills you have in this subject, applying your skills and knowledge in a more complex way.
Course overview
Course description
This course is suitable for both beginners and learners with previous knowledge of dressmaking. In this course you will get to know how to set up a sewing machine and learn how to use the variety of built in functions of a sewing machine. You will have access to lockstitch machines and overlocking machines. You will develop your sewing skills by creating a folder of sewing samples that will explore techniques such as seam types, fabric manipulation such as gathers and pleating, darts, pockets and edge and hem finishes. All sewing skills will be taught in line with industry standards and techniques to achieve the professional finish to a garment. You will learn how to follow and understand pattern instructions and prepare fabric for cutting and lay fabric economically. Finally, you will combine these skills to create a basic blouse by following a set of instructions as well as producing a cost sheet which will determine the retail price of your finished blouse.
Throughout the course you will learn the terminology used in the garment construction industry.
Assessment of learning will be done at regular intervals throughout the course.
Information, advice, and guidance will be given throughout to enable further progression of study or employment.
Sewing machines will be provided but you will need bring your own sewing kit and cotton fabric. However, we encourage you to be sustainable so an old cotton bedsheet or several old pillowcases would also be suitable to create your project.
