Course overview

This course follows on from Painting and Drawing 2. It enables further development of your skills in observational drawing through mark making and applying colour theory in painting. The focus is on ways of seeing, perceiving and expressing emotions creatively. Gallery visits are used to observe and discuss contemporary and historical artwork. Weekly practical sessions where you will explore and experiment on developing your own style and approach to your chosen themes or subjects. This course will enable you to build your confidence in drawing and paint handling skills. This is developed through practical drawing and painting focussed modules in different practical techniques. It seeks to offer you an opportunity to identify exactly which subjects interest you and make you want to draw and paint.

Course description

10 weekly practical sessions that use practical tasks to enable you to develop your visual understanding via observational studies and exploration of theoretical approaches used by contemporary artists.

The course seeks to enable you to identify ways to expand your own ideas and approaches to the subject matter in your artwork.

With the use of sketchbook experiments of practical studies and to develop technical materials handling you will also be encouraged to use primary research to explore subject matter. Who paints what and why! And how do they do that?

During the course you will undertake some research into the work of 2 artists of your choice (selected from a list). Research into the different styles of drawing and painting methods used by contemporary artists.

The research tasks offer insight into the work of other artists. It shows not only their approach to their subjects, but also leads to greater understanding of how to attain fulfilling realisation of your own approaches to creative exploration in artwork.

This is intended to enable you to identify and apply your own style and approach in drawing and painting. Which it is hoped will lead you onto your chosen path in drawing and painting. Your creative journey which captures your unique perspective of the world around you. An artist in our time.
