Course description

Explore Southampton City Art Gallery’s diverse collection of fine art, which can tell the story of European art from the Renaissance through to the present day. Regularly rotating displays feature works from the collection, national touring exhibitions and work by local artists. The group will gather in the central hall, above the library (accessible by lift and stairs). Please bring a sketchbook, coloured pencils, eraser, and a bottle of water. There will be a short ‘comfort’ break in the session. Small portable chairs are available for those wishing to be seated during the tour, and larger benches are interspersed in the Gallery. The session will be divided in two sections, so that an overview of art on display may b gained, enabling participants to select a few art works to study further in their sketchbooks, with guidance from the tutor- a professional artist and member of the Gallery education team. This course is suitable for complete beginners and those who have more experience. Gain an insight into the cultural treasure on your doorstep.
