Course overview
Course description
The changes the metropolis experienced across the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries are mapped onto the drinking house. Starting with a pub that doubled up as a Catholic church during the Reformation, complete, it is said, with priest holes. Passing pubs where the Dutch sailors drank while their ships sat at the exit of the river Fleet, one of London’s lost rivers, and places where notorious criminals once sat.
Samuel Pepys, the famous seventeen century diarist, frequented many of the establishments we will explore along with a whole host of other colourful characters including the criminal and prison escape artist Jack Sheppard. Drinking establishments were the location of plots, intrigue, good fellowship, song, and dance. Ballads adorned the walls and these too have stories to tell.
