Course overview

This short course will introduce students to past concepts and perceptions of fun. What did people eat and drink for pleasure, what sports and games were played when people had spare time, and how was both the playing and listening of music enjoyed in sixteenth and seventeen century England? Through examining some primary sources, such as recipe books, maybe even playing a game or two, and reading and listening to ballads, by the end of the two weeks, students will have gained insight into aspects of past concepts of fun and note both the similarities and differences to how ‘fun’ is thought of today.

Course description

Over the two weeks, students will explore a range of activities around what early modern people would have done for ‘fun’ and how this changed and evolved over time. These sessions will be interactive and, although there is no preparation required, students should attend being aware that participation in activities is required. There are only four hours in total for this course, therefore only an overview with a few specifics will be presented. Each session will be split in two with the first hour being more of an interactive lecture and the second half consisting of activities. Each student will be provided with a small handbook so they can explore these subjects further in their own time should they wish to do so.
