Course overview

If you are a beginner sewer and would like to get started with some small, easy projects, come and join this new course. No previous experience of the sewing machine is necessary. We will start with getting used to the machine and making a simple pin cushion. This will also make us think about what fabric we can recycle and how to use up all the little scraps of fabric you may have and are not sure what to do with. You will find that many useful and decorative items can be created at home using materials you already have instead of buying new.

Course description

We can all find ways of making our everyday lives more sustainable to save money and help the environment. You can re-use and recycle small pieces of fabric to create many useful and beautiful items of your own design from home. This course will take you through the basics of machine sewing from the beginning. Once you have got used to using it and have made a simple pin cushion, we will then move onto making small sewing projects with sustainability in mind. These will include a mending kit to keep threads and needles in, a zip purse, a patchwork cushion and a choice of bags. Skills covered will include: seams and hems, buttonholes, inserting zips, sewing and reinforcing corners, sewing curves and darts.

We will explore how designers and artists consider sustainability and look at where resources can be bought sustainably and ethically. You will be able to use some of their ideas to inspire your own designs and create some unique and personal accessories. You will also become familiar with the importance of accurate measuring and calculations when creating your projects.

After this course, you can progress to a further craft course at intermediate level. You can also progress to digital skills, English or maths courses.
