Course overview

The environmental impact of textiles production is becoming more and more important. Why buy new when you can create your own unique designs using what you already have? This course will teach you plenty of skills on how to mend your clothes beautifully and originally. We will look at the historical art of Sashiko patterns and the Boro mending technique that was used in Japan in the Edo period. There will be plenty of beautiful patterns to choose from and to learn about and to sew yourselves. As this course is intermediate, a grasp of basic hand sewing is needed.

Course description

Considering how, where and who made our clothes is becoming increasingly important. Plenty of tips on how to research this will be given during the course and there will be plenty of class discussion on this topic each week. By extending the lives of our clothes we will be fighting against fast fashion and the huge impact this has had on the planet and the people who make our clothes. Bringing this awareness to our creativity will make the sewing and crafting we do so much more rewarding.

We will expand our knowledge on the resources needed throughout the course and learn about the history of the Boro technique. Later on, we will also look at other various other visible mending techniques and how and why these are used.

You will also be able to practise measuring and marking skills to ensure accuracy in the creation of your projects.

After completing this course, you can progress to a craft course at Advanced Level. You can also progress to digital skills, maths or English courses.
