Course overview

This is a 3-week intensive course, for those whose first language is NOT English, to improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. The course will run during school hours on 3 consecutive Fridays during June. This course will use the themes of beliefs about ‘chance’, mysteries in literature, and our attitude to the media to practise English in a relatable and meaningful way. It will include individual, pair and group work with opportunities to improve all four main skills. You are expected to have a reasonable level of English, as materials will be at B1/B2 proficiency. The course will cover some aspects of pronunciation and grammar in addition to practising the 4 main skills.

Course description

This inclusive and friendly 3 week course will introduce you to the third conditional, building on question tags and indirect questions, as well as present further phrasal verbs. You will also be introduced to associated positive and negative adjectives and adverbs, intonation in question tags, compound nouns and review the linking of sounds. You will look at the functions of apologising and giving excuses and the main written element of the course will be a magazine article. We will use the topics of ‘Luck’, Murder Mysteries and Media as a fun way to explore these aspects of language. There will be opportunities for you to learn, practice and develop new concepts in the sessions and you will be encouraged to reflect on your own learning in each session. In addition to formative quizzes in class, there will be a short test at the end of the course to enable you to recognize your own progress and identify areas for further practice. There will be opportunity for everyone to ask questions and bring lexis into the classroom from your own personal experience outside of the classroom. After completing this course, you will be ready to progress onto the next higher level (B2) course.
