Course overview

This course is intended for ESOL learners who would like to develop language skills while learning about the Countryside and Wildlife of the British Isles. The course is designed to explore the outdoors, use ESOL and practical skills to improve health, wellbeing and understanding of the British natural world. It is intended that this course will develop a sense of shared responsibility towards the local green spaces. You will explore texts, flora, fauna and take part in practical activities to learn about nature both in the classroom and outdoors. This course is free for Southampton residents.

Course description

ESOL Outdoors will introduce you to the Countryside, Nature and Wildlife of the British Isles, improving your language skills as we go. This course will be taught in a classroom and sometimes outdoors exploring the local area. It will open up different aspects of the British natural world through a range of texts and activities to develop your vocabulary, spelling, reading and writing. You will explore the outdoors, use ESOL and practical skills to improve health, wellbeing and understanding of the British natural world. This course could lead to a gardening, environment or permaculture course. You will also be encouraged to volunteer locally at Southampton’s WEA Learning Centre or other green areas of Southampton working alongside Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust among other organisations. This course is part of Southampton City Council’s adult education programme and is free to residents of Southampton who live in the following postcodes SO14, SO15, SO16, SO17, SO18 and SO19. What financial support is available?

We don't want anything to stand in your way when it comes to bringing Adult learning within reach so if you need anything to support you to achieve your goals then speak to one of our education experts during your enrolment journey. Most of our courses are government funded but if you don't qualify or need alternative financial help to access them then let us know.
