Course overview

This course is for adult learners whose first language is not English. The course will provide support with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and is particularly aimed at learners who need extra help with reading and writing and the English alphabet. On this course you will improve reading and writing, including spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and simple sentences. The course is for learners with a pre-entry level of English. This is the continuing course and gives the learners to progress onto the next stage of their learning at this level and will help prepare them to move onto entry 1 provision in September.

Course description

During the course you will continue to learn English again back in the classroom which will help you better explore and take part in your local community and to help build your employability skills for work. The fully trained tutors will run the classes face to face at the Faith Centre on Burney Campus where you can meet other learners and work together to learn the language. The course will help you to build your confidence when dealing with day to day matters such as looking or work, attending appointments, your children’s school and out in the community. The course is designed for learners who know no or very little English already and who need to build their skills up ready to progress onto higher level courses next year.

Any new learners who want to join the course will have your English skills will be checked with a short test so that the tutor can make sure that the class is right for you. This course is for people with very little English. You do not need any ESOL qualifications to join. Once you have built your English skills up there will be an opportunity for learners to continue their studies with higher level courses and start to progress onto qualifications.
