Shahzeb, aged 32 was volunteering for the British Red Cross to help support members of his community when they referred him to a WEA Community Interpreting course to develop his interpreting skills in his volunteering position.
He began at level one before progressing to level two and is now looking at opportunities for a career as an interpreter.
In terms of the boost to his skills, Shahzeb commented: “I have learned about intervention, assertiveness and cultural conflict management skills. I also learned how to effectively translate. This course has enabled me to make new friends from various parts of the world and helped me to learn more about their cultures.
“My knowledge and understanding about confidentiality and impartiality has also greatly increased – improving my employment prospects. I would love to say that one must join WEA to gain confidence, knowledge, make friends and also to have a continuous professional development.”
