Sarah, aged 40 from Sheffield joined the Helping in School course after her mum saw the course advertised in the local library and gave her the leaflet.
Since joining the course, it has opened up so many doors for her professional development. The course enabled her to volunteer at Wybourn Community Primary School, which she did for three years before going on to get a full-time job. The head teacher specifically asked her to apply for the Teaching Assistant position – which gave Sarah a much needed confidence boost as she felt someone had noticed her potential.
The course was the platform for her career and since then she has completed a Special Educational Needs course and maths level one and two with the WEA and lots more training courses to give her more experience and boost her CV.
Since then she has gone from strength to strength – presenting at an awards evening at the school and getting involved in schools programmes on health and fitness and becoming the after-school club manager.
Working at the school has enabled her to further develop her skills and she has now completed her Level 3 Teaching Assistant. From September 2019, Sarah will be starting a new chapter in her learning journey as she will be studying a BA in Education Culture and Childhood with a Foundation year at The Sheffield University.
Sarah commented: “The course has given me confidence and self-belief. In my life outside of work I have recently passed my driving test and overcame my fears.
It made me more resilient in pursuing my goals by not giving up and continuing through difficulties. I have taken part in many 10k running events and half marathons following this and these experiences have taught me that when you’re determined enough you can achieve anything.”
Sarah is now encouraging more people to join WEA courses and said of others going back into education: “It will transform your life, just like it has done mine. It will boost your confidence and working in a relaxed friendly environment will enable you to thrive, as you move through your professional journey”.
